Toenail Fungus Grapefruit Seed Extract

Toenail Fungus Remedy

Of all the infections that you can develop, toenail fungus is not the most serious, but it is the most difficult to cure. The main problem is that the infected area is protected by the nail itself as it grows in between the skin and the underside of the nail.

People search for remedies and are willing to try a host of different techniques in search of a toenail fungus remedy that works. If you have this problem then you have likely tried a number of different remedies yourself.

The other reason to seek out alternative treatments is that the over the counter oral treatments can have bad side effects. Alternatives that you can try at home consist of soaking the infected area. You can try soaking your toes in a vinegar or peroxide solution, mouthwash with anti bacterial properties like Listerine, chest rub or beer. Yes that is right - beer can be an effective toenail fungus remedy! There are probiotics in the beer like acidophilus and vinegar that can kill the fungus.

Different strains of toenail fungus will be affected by different solutions, so you may have to experiment to find out which one works best for the type of fungus you have. Beer contains bacteria that are created during the fermentation process. These same bacteria are also found naturally in the body where they suppress yeast growth and prevent fungus growth in the mouth. Since they are effective at combating fungus inside the body, it makes sense that they would be effective at combating fungus outside the body as well.

Beer is an inexpensive and convenient source of these fungus fighting bacteria and that is why it makes a good toenail fungus remedy. And as an added bonus, if you pick it up a six pack, you will have something to do while you sit around and soak your feet. One for the feet...five left for you: How terribly convenient.

Another option for soaking is Listerine or other mouthwashes. Like the beer you will need to soak your feet for a significant amount of time each day. But do not drink what is left in the bottle after you treat your feet! Stick to the beer for that part of the treatment. The disinfectant in the mouthwash is what attacks and kills the fungus. The downside is that it also kills the helpful bacteria on your skin that naturally help protect you from fungus growth.

This means that you had better not skip a day of soaking during treatment or the fungus will make a comeback with a vengeance. The full treatment may take a full month if you have lost the nail. You have to wait until a new nail has grown in to protect the vulnerable skin below. If you have been soaking every day, then there should not be any fungus left on the skin that is now protected by the new nail. If you are not careful however, the fungus will come back and you will have to start all over again.

    • ANSWER:
      Hello,
      I've had this problem on my big toe of my left foot for a while and I recently found this Anti-fungal Solution from 'TwinStar herbals.' I've only been using it twice a day for a couple weeks and I've already noticed a huge difference. It was really bad before and now it is growing in normal and the top part is like before, so soon it will be completely normal. The brand probably doesn't matter but try to find a herbal topical solution like it, these are the contents:
      olive oil extracts of organic calendula, organic black walnut hulls and leaf, wild oregano oil, organic garlic, goldenseal root, neem oil, tea tree oil, eucalyptus essential oil, grapefruit seed extract, self-heal flower essence.

      I just take a q-tip and dip it into the solution then apply it to the top of the toe nail. It's amazing how well and fast it works, hope that helps!

    is there a secret remedy to remove fungai from a toenail?
    (not me) but my cousin has a yellow toe nail. I told him to go to the doctor. but he says that they wont do anything but give him some creame that wont work....

    *** Mushrooms walks into a bar. The mushrooms starts hitting on this waitress. After a few minutes. The waitress tells the mushroom that shes not interested.
    And the mushrooms says, "why not? I'm a fungai".

    • ANSWER:
      It is notoriously difficult to get rid of a fungal toe nail infection, depending on how advanced the infection is.

      Anything applied externally is not going to work unless the surface nail is filed over as much as possible with an emery board prior to application to help facilitate the penetration of the active ingredient. Even so it is doubtful it would work unless the problem is tackled from withing also.

      I knew someone who had the problem for some time and tea tree oil did not work and treatment from the doctors did not work either, but the infection was quite advanced.

      Treatment from the doctor is usually a cream or nail paint and/or a tablet that has to be taken for several months for a toe nail infection.

      Your cousin could try the nail paint you can purchase from a pharmacy or a combination of the essential oils of thyme, clove and myrrh [see this article for more information: http://ezinearticles.com/?Free-Yourself-of-Toenail-Fungus-FOREVER-With-Pure-Essential-Oils&id=857579 ]. Grapefruit Seed Extract should be taken internally....3 times a day, 5 to 10 drops, as an antifungal to work from within..A probiotic (such as L. acidophilus) needs to be taken ideally at the same time, and also after stopping any internal treatment...whether the natural GSE or one from a doctor if your cousin prefers to go down that route.

      In advanced cases that don't respond to treatments the nails have to be surgically removed under a local anesthetic.

  5. QUESTION:
    How can i fix my toe nail ? :( ?
    A couple months ago after going to the nail shop for a pedicure my toe nail was infected with fungus. Back in Nov. 2012 my nails was ready to just pop off until one day i hit my nail really hard on my bed and little did i know my whole nail came off. Now i am nail-less and of course it is EMBARRASSING! Spring is coming i want to wear sandals :( how can i fix my nail the fungus is still there and my nail still has to grow :( help???

    • ANSWER:
      ink i read something about vinegar but i will find out if not go to the nailery nd get a product called fungaway or something i thing there is a product in rite aid also

      Step 1
      Apply Vicks VapoRub to the affected toenail. The New York Times article states that thymol, which is found in oil of thyme, an active ingredient in Vicks that has antiseptic properties. Dr. Andrew Weil also mentions Vicks as a possible home remedy for nail fungus and advises rubbing it into the nail twice a day. Weil goes onto state that your success rate using this technique may vary; anecdotally, some people have stated that it took mere days to notice an improvement, while others indicated that it took between four to six months.

      Step 2
      Paint tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract onto the infected toenail. This is the treatment for toenail fungus that Weil personally recommends. Treat the toenail twice a day. Weil cautions that it may take up to a year for this home remedy to work, as your toenail has to grow out entirely fungus-free.

      Step 3
      Use a vinegar soak. This home remedy to treat toenail fungus is recommended by Mayo Clinic experts, who note that vinegar may prevent bacterial growth. Mix 2 parts warm water to 1 part vinegar and place the affected foot in the solution for 15 to 20 minutes each day. If your skin becomes irritated, cut back on the frequency of foot soaks or dilute the mixture with more water.

      Step 4
      Prevent reinfection. Keep your toenails clean and dry as much as possible. Trim the toenail straight across and file down thick areas, advises Mayo Clinic experts. Wear shoes or sandals whenever you're in a damp, public place, such as a swimming pool or locker room. Choose synthetic socks over those made of wool or cotton. You may also want to use a nonprescription antifungal power or spray on your feet and inside of your shoes.

    • ANSWER:
      Onychomycosis means fungal infection of the nail. It is the most common disease of the nails
      This condition may affect toenails or fingernails, but toenail infections are particularly common.
      Treatment
      Treatment of onychomycosis is challenging because the infection is embedded within the nail and is difficult to reach. As a result full removal of symptoms is very slow and may take a year or more
      Pharmacologic Rx
      Most treatments are either systemic antifungal medications such as terbinafine and itraconazole, or topical such as nail paints containing ciclopirox or amorolfine. There is also evidence for combining systemic and topical treatments
      A 2007 randomised clinical trial with 249 patients show that a combination of amorolfine nail lacquer and oral terbinafine enhances clinical efficacy and is more cost-effective than terbinafine alone
      Natural remedies
      Australian tea tree oil.Grapefruit seed extract,Saturate the affected toenail with vinegar, twice a day, for two weeks.
      Prevention
      Avoid walking barefoot in public areas such as showers, communal changing rooms. Keeping feet clean and dry. Avoid sharing shoes and socks

  7. QUESTION:
    hey im in lots of pain because?
    my toe is infected i noe it sounds gross but ive tried everything from violeta remedy to carbonaded water from a safety pin to alcohol (rubbing) PLS PLS PLS PLS!!!!!!!! HELP!

    • ANSWER:
      the natural antibiotics that you should take internally would be garlic (raw fresh..at least 3 or 4 cloves a day), grapefruit seed extract and/or olive leaf extract. (use a tincture).all of these kill bacteria, viruses, fuguses, and protozoans and are found at the health food store. If one rubs garlic on the feet, for example, it will very soon be on the breath and visa versa showing how it goes throughout the body so consume it but it would burn to much to use on the toe directly so don't IMO

      also of help are colloidal silver and oil of oregano..flood our body with these and also apply the colloidal silver.

      I did a little searching and found these ideas too

      http://www.eytonsearth.org/staph-infection-clay.php used clay with great success and saved from amputation this site says (they also have a message board)

      Go to the health food store and get some charcoal capsules. Empty some of the charcoal on a piece of dampened gauze and tape it over your toe, it will draw out the infection. (add this to the bentonite clay to draw the infection out)

      toenail fungus is a cause of infection and difficult to treat..these are recommended but you may need to do more searching on that, but I feel the things I first recommended would be effective (olive leaf, grapefruit seed extract, and fresh garlic --also colloidal silver/oil of oregano would be 2nd tier suggestions)

      - Common Vinegar- As some may now, vinegar is antiseptic. It can also work on a variety of infections including those caused by fungi. You can use apple cider or cane vinegar. You can apply this remedy without diluting it directly on the affected nail. An alternative would be to soak your nail on a basin with equal portions of vinegar and lukewarm water.

      be cautious of tea tree oil and dilute
      - The Tea Tree Oil- This natural remedy is as popular as oil of oregano. It also has strong antifungal and antiseptic properties. It is in fact so strong that concentrated amounts of tea tree oil may cause skin irritation. You should therefore settle for a diluted preparation. Tea tree oil can be applied directly to the infected nail.

      - The Vicks Vapor Rub- This particular remedy isn't easy to explain. In fact, there are very few explanations on why Vicks can work well on nail fungus. It has been suggested that the natural components of Vicks Vapor Rub are possibly good toe nail fungus remedies.

      also might mention dr richard schulze formulas..he says this never fails but it burns a lot so I doubt if I would use on a tender area..he also makes this milder one...you might want to read it and see what you think but maybe try other stuff first

  8. QUESTION:
    my thumb nails have developed deep indents, like ridges. what's wrong?
    what might be wrong with me if my thumb nails have developed indentations parallel to the cuticle? I first noticed one line on each nail, and a few days ago each thumb developed another. It looks like i slammed both my thumbs in a car door really hard, except there is no bruising or pain. I think I have some sort of vitamin deficiency but i don't know which one. Any help would be appreciated, thankyou!

    • ANSWER:
      it could be a nail fungus robbing you of your precious calcium, protein, B vitamins so essential for hair skin and nail health........ an overgrowth of candida albicans ..... if that's the case you need to cut out processed sugar and yeast in your diet (which will only serve to feed an overgrowth of candida albicans) ........ and get yourself a good quality natural antifungal.

      Some suggestions for a natural antifungal are ~ Oil of Oregano ~ antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and antiparasitic ..... it has strong antioxidant and antiflammatory effects and is quite effective in eliminating Candida ....... not regular oregano but a wild form (wild mountain oregano, Origanum vulgare species) ..... your local health food store may be able to help you with this one... Oil of Oregano has no side effects and oregano is compatible with any other natural remedy or prescription drug....... the active compounds in Oil of Oregano also act as free radical scavengers thus prevent further tissue damage while encouraging healing.

      Grapefruit Seed Extract ~ Go to your local health food store and ask the resident naturopath his/her advice on Grapefruit seed extract.. they don't usually charge for off the cuff advice and are more than willing to share their knowledge ..... Grapefruit seed extract is a multipurpose (broad spectrum) compound that is currently being used in humans and animals alike to safely fight many types of internal and external infections caused from parasites (single and multi-celled), viruses, bacteria and fungi.

      Grapefruit seed extracts biggest benefit is due to it's multipurpose (broad spectrum) effect. It is effective even if the causes of the infections are known, unknown or misdiagnosed. By eliminating a wide range of dangerous pathogens grapefruit seed extract actually enhances the immune system.

      Freshly crushed cloves of garlic mixed throughout your green vegies and lentils or brown rice, beans, salads etc....... will also help enormously in eradicating parasites and fungus overgrowth..... garlic arre a powerfull natural antibiotic, antiparasitic, antifungal, antibacterial.

      Ask at the health food store about other natural antifungals such as Colloidal Silver, Powerded Vitamin C with bioflavonoids, Olive leaf extract too.......... ;0)

      Read a book called "Complete Candida Yeast Guidebook" ~ Revised 2nd Edition by jeanne Marie Martin with Zoltan P.Rona, M.D... fabulous reading there for you..... good health to you buddy and good luck.

      And, of course, complete and total avoidance of any food or drink that contains yeast or sugar ......... fanatical label reading or simply don't eat from a package and prepare fresh fruit, vegies, rices, beans, lentils, some lean meats, organic nuts and seeds yourself ..... and drinking plenty of fresh filtered water .... hydrating yourself properly ..... some people find success by also eliminating natural sugars such as fruits and raw honey...... that's the final route i had to go ..... eliminating all fruit sugars ... even the low sugar ones like pears and strawberries ..... and raw honey for a while.....;0)

      Other symptoms common of a candida albicans overgrowth in your system are ~

      Digestive disorders, including IBS;
      Gastrointestinal symptoms: thrush, bloating gas, rectal itching;
      Vaginal yeast infections;
      Urinary tract infections;

  9. QUESTION:
    Toe Fungus will not go away.?
    I've lost my toe nail twice and it grows back real soft and then the fungus is back again. I even tried prescription medicine.

    • ANSWER:
      Make sure you stay away from sugar and high carbohydrate diets; a diet high in sugar and carbs actually feeds fungus, so staying away from those things helps it die off much more quickly. And yes, systemically what you eat can even affect nail fungus!

      You may need to be on prescription medicine for months or years - for a resistant, set-in infection it's 6 months minimum with oral prescription medications (pills from your doctor, like Lamisil) along with topical treatments.

      Try using two different types of topical toenail fungus treatments - an anti-fungal cream or spray, like Lamisil spray, along with the antifungal nail polish type (many different brands - found in the nail care section of the pharmacy w/the manicure/pedicure stuff). They add to each other's effectiveness.

      Add supplements such as Caprylic Acid or Grapefruit Seed Extract to your diet. You can also get Grapefruit Seed Extract spray @ the health food store, which works well to alternate with the other topical treatments as well.

      Make sure you wash your feet w/antibacterial soap at least once, if not twice, daily. You can also soak the nail in BenzaClenz (from the drugstore, in the first aid section) which is an antibacterial treatment that will help kill fungus.

      Don't use regular nail polish at all, it will make the problem worse. Just the antifungal stuff.

      Hope this helps!

  10. QUESTION:
    What causes ONLY the 1st [big] toenail to yellow? How do various practitioners/traditions treat this?
    More may be involved than fungus... or not. The big toes relate to the liver channel in Chinese medicine as do the nails. Fungus may be treated either with anti-fungals from the MD or with anti-fungal essential oils as in Vick's Vapor Rub and similar preparations. [Such treatments are sometimes MD acknowledged. The newspaper column of Gott in the USA is one source that has brought this possible treatment to public awareness.] With yellow nails ONLY on the big toes, your MD might want to have liver enzyme tests done as well as other liver function tests, especially if the immune systems is strong and there are no other signs of susceptibility to opportunistic infections. What other successful ways of treating this condition are you aware of?

    • ANSWER:
      first up........ sorry about the length of my answer.... but you do need to know all this.

      that sounds like a candida albicans overgrowth in your system mate...... that's a sure fire sign that you need to ditch eating sugar and yeast ......... The only sure fire way to resolve a candida albicans overgrowth is to starve it to death........ to eliminate all sugar and yeast from your diet...... yes that's hard because you generally need to eliminate all fruit sugars as well (as i had to) ........ but it works... it would be a really good idea to empower yourself with knowledge in regards to the nature of an overgrowth of candida albicans......basically it hinges on managing to completely eliminate sugar and yeast ..... candida will thrive and flourish on both....... so yeah ........ sauces, juices, spreads, packaged foods, packaged anything, bottled anything ..... and that includes supplements, tablets, cough mixtures .... every single thing you put in your mouth is a possible culprit for containing sugar ....... opening a bottle or packet or tin is pretty much out unless it specifically states "no sugar at all"........ and that's not going to happen unfortunately....... fresh food that you prepare yourself so that you know precisely whats in it is the way to beat it mate.

      The classic telltale signs of a yeast overgrowth ....... candidiasis ...... are those of a white tongue (thrush), toenail or fingernail fungus, jock itch or athlete's foot, and vaginal yeast infections........... an overgrowth of yeast can affect virtually every system of the body with the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, endocrine, nervous and immune systems being the most susceptible.... common symptoms of candidiasis include:

      Digestive disorders, including IBS;
      Gastrointestinal symptoms: thrush, bloating gas, rectal itching;
      Vaginal yeast infections;
      Urinary tract infections;

  11. QUESTION:
    Anti-fungal remedy?
    I have mild cases of dandruff, eczema, and toenail discoloration, all of which I have been told is caused by fungus. Is there some remedy I can take as a pill or otherwise that can kill this fungus growing inside of me?

    • ANSWER:
      You will have to take an holistic approach as there is no magic bullet at such but rather the treatment needs to be the adoption of many approaches so as to get any fungus in the system under control, against its competitors: the gut friendly micro-organisms such as the Lactobacillus species (as found in many commercial yogurts nowadays).

      If you have a fungal overgrowth, you may have some other symptoms such as feeling sluggish, bloatedness, abdominal gases, and a coated tongue and yeasty taste in the mouth. Symptoms may worsen after a meal loaded with sugar, further suggesting a systemic fungal problem. I think its rare that the problem is isolated to the toe nails so you do need an whole-body holistic approach. Make sure your blood sugar levels are within the normal range too as fungal problems can often be linked to raised blood sugar levels. You need to rule out diabetes. Talk to your health care advisor as you should be having periodic blood sugar checks anyway.

      Firstly, you really need to think about cutting down on the fungus feeders: sugar and sugary products (cakes, sweeets, biscuits), yeast and yeast-like products and natural foodstuffs (bread, beer & wines, mushrooms, marmite/vegemite for example).

      There are some herbs and herbal products or natural supplements that can help: garlic, caprylic acid (extracted from coconut oil), biotin (a B Vitamin that stops the mycelial/branching form developing, cinnamon, pau d'Arco, aloe vera juice, goldenseal tincture, myrrh tincture, grapefruit seed extract, chamomile tea, acidophilus capsules.

      You could consider taking some or all of these supplements, depending on how much you want to spend. If you are on blood thinning medication then talk to a doctor or pharmacist first before taking garlic.

      Have you tried Rescue Remedy cream, chamomile cream or calendula cream for your eczema. These might help.

      Having a colonic irrigation is something else worth considering as the complete cleaning out of the colon can help remove much yeast overgrowth. Find a reputable practitioner who can offer detoxing advice as part of the treatment.

      Hope this helps.
      Best wishes.

      Decide to clean up your daily diet too mate......Candidiasis almost never occurs in people with healthy immune systems who eat a diet low in sugar and yeast....you need to avoid all yeast and sugar products to kill a yeast infection ......... sugar will literally feed the yeast overgrowth allowing it to flourish......... ditch the alcohol and sodas and diet sodas too if you drink any .......... antiobiotics, especially broad - spectrum antiobiotics will also kill the helpful bacteria which you need for a healthy gut ........ supplement with a good quality probiotic to rebalance gut flora ......... this part is absolutely essential for without the good flora your system will remain completely out of whack ...... eat more alkaline forming foods such as leafy and green vegies, fishes such as tuna, salmon, sardines and whiting, organic nuts and seeds such as almonds and brazil nuts........ all these foods are rich in magnesium and will thus encourage the production of hydrochloric acid in your tummy aiding in digestion and effective elimination ........the leafy greens and fishes are also rich in calcium and protein and the fish are a rich source of vitamin D too ....... eat organic brown rice and quinoa (prounounced keen ~ wah) as they are both a rich source of the B complex of vitamins and will provide you with the carbs you need for sustained energy and the quinoa is also rich in calcium and iron .......... don't forget about getting enough iron on a daily basis too ie ~ lean red meats ..... Avoid sugars such as honey, molasses, fructose, maltose, lactose (that means all milk and dairy products) and fruit juices ...... avoid artificial sweetners and foods containing brewer's yeast - ie - alcohol such as beer, wine, brandy, whiskey, rum, ciders and root beer.... avoid baker's yeast ie ~ breads and rolls and pastries .... avoid mushrooms ... avoid fruits and vegies with any sign of mold growth on them .... avoid fermented beverages and condiments including mayonnaise, ketchup, pickled vegies and pickles, salad dressings (use lemon and olive oil instead), soy sauce and vinegar .... avoid all types of hard cheeses which are a pretty good source of mold.... avoid processed and smoked meats and fish, including hot dogs, sausages, luncheon meats etc....... these meats are processed with sugar, spices, yeast and other preservatives .... avoid canned bottled or frozen fruit and vegie juices cos they have loads of sugar and are commonly made from overripened or damaged produce; generally the skin of the fruit contains surface mold and rotten spots, which are pulverised into the juice... avoid dried fruits.... avoid coffee & tea as much as you can as caffeine will aggravate yeast overgrowth..................... you don't need to use medications to kill a yeast overgrowth ..... simply eliminate their food source and they will disappear on their own ...... if you normalise the bacterial flora in the gastrointestinal tract you will feel much better and in most cases won't need drugs.

      truly, eat loads and loads of green and leafy vegies, squeeze lemon juice over it to spice it up and help torch bacteria and bolster both your immunity and digestive process ........eat some low sugar fruits each day too such as strawberries, pears and watermelon and cold water fresh fishes and brown rice / quinoa / lentils and beans and watch it clear up........ oh, drink loads and loads of fresh filtered water to ... to ensure you are properly hydrated as the healthiest and happiest body will always be the most hydrated one .

      make sure that you only eat organic nuts and seeds like almonds, brazil nuts and sunflower seeds too as they "preserve" the commercial varieties with sulfites and other nasty chemicals that will upset sensitive digestive systems.

      hope you feel better soon

      peace 2 you

  13. QUESTION:
    "Onychomycosis" Fungal Q?? Med experts please.?
    My mum who is 65 has been to the Dr who has taken culture sample of her toe nails for the above mentioned. The thing that worries me is that it is effecting ONLY her "big" toe nails which are brown and very discoloured (one more so than the other). None of her other nails seem to be effected. I have looked on the net and treatment seems either useless or very very expensive. Can any1 with medical exp please help explain to me why this may have occured? so we can perhaps stop this from spreading in the future. Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
      Onychomycosis means fungal infection of the nails. It represents up to 20% of all nail disorders.

      This condition may affect toe- or fingernails, but toenail infections are particularly common. The prevalence of onychomycosis is about 6-8% in the adult population.[1] The most common type of onychomycosis (80-90%), caused by dermatophytes, is technically known as tinea unguium (tinea of the nails)
      Dermatophytes are the fungi most commonly responsible for onychomycosis. Two dermatophyte species, Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton interdigitale, cause the vast majority of onychomycosis cases worldwide. Other related dermatophyte fungi that may be involved are Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton violaceum, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton tonsurans, Trichophyton soudanense (considered by some to be an African variant of T. rubrum rather than a full-fledged separate species) and the cattle ringworm fungus Trichophyton verrucosum. A common outdated name that may still be reported by medical laboratories is Trichophyton mentagrophytes for T. interdigitale. The name T. mentagrophytes is now restricted to the agent of favus skin infection of the mouse; though this fungus may be transmitted from mice and their danders to humans, it generally infects skin and not nails.

      Other causal fungi include yeasts (5-17%), e.g., Candida, and non-dermatophytic moulds, in particular members of the mould genera Scytalidium (name recently changed to Neoscytalidium), Scopulariopsis, and Aspergillus.

      Onychomycosis due to Trychophyton rubrum, right and left great toe.Yeasts mainly cause fingernail onychomycosis in people whose hands are often submerged in water. Scytalidium mainly affects people in the tropics, though it persists if they later move to areas of temperate climate.

      Other moulds mainly affect people over the age of 60, and their presence in the nail reflects a slight weakening in the nail's ability to defend itself against fungal invasion.

      Treatments are usually commenced after laboratory confirmation of fungal invasion based on microscopic examination and culture of nail scrapings or clippings. Systemic antifungal medications such as terbinafine and itraconazole have been shown to be effective in treating it, as have some topical nail paints, such as one containing ciclopirox

      Natural Remedies:
      As with many diseases, there are also some scientifically unverified folk or alternative medicine remedies.

      Tea tree oil is a known antifungal. The topical application of high levels is a verified remedy for some dermatophytic skin infections although not for onychomycosis, where the fungus is often too deeply nested in dense subsurface nail tissue to be full expunged by topically applied materials of any kind.

      Grapefruit seed extract as a natural antimicrobial is not demonstrated. Its effectiveness is scientifically unverified. Multiple studies indicate that the universal antimicrobial activity is due to contamination with synthetic preservatives that were unlikely to be made from the seeds of the grapefruit
      Distilled white vinegar[citation needed]. Drops are applied to the cuticle twice a day. This method does not kill the fungus, but the vinegar allegedly changes the pH (acid content) of the new nail formed in that 12-hour period. (The scientific perspective, however, is that vinegar is unlikely to penetrate the dense keratinous tissue thoroughly enough to have any significant effect. Instead, it may be absorbed by the skin above the nail and work its way to where the nail is actually forming.) As the old, infected nail grows and is cut away, it is said to be replaced by an acidic nail, uninhabitable by fungi. Several months of consistent application are involved.
