Toenail Fungus Garlic

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    What is the best thing to do for toenail fungus? Without taking the pills like lamisil.?
    I am only 16 and have toenail fungus! I can hardly wear flipflops because it looks so bad. PLEASE HELP!

    • ANSWER:
      You can kill toenail fungus with a strong soapy water (really scrub), with tea tree oil, with clove oil, or by coating your feet with honey which will draw out the moisture from the fungus and cause it to die. If you use honey, you still have to scrub a lot afterwards. If your toenail fungus is underneath the nails, the oils will work the best but you may have to see a doctor. For the oils: once a day, for 20 minutes and use generous amounts. You could actually use garlic oil too but your breath would end up smelling like garlic as your body absorbs the stuff.

  2. QUESTION:
    Are there natural cures for toenail fungus?
    My doctor said I have toenail fungus,and he said that products sold on the market could interact with a medication I take and affect my liver.I would like an alternative.Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
      It depends on how chronic a case you have. There are over the counter lacquers for toenail fungus but as per the box instructions, these are only really suitable where a couple of nails are affected. With anything more chronic...they might not work. Also you have to persist and use for several months before you might see any results....as the nails grow out. And you have to be careful not to contaminate any healthy nails with the applicator stick and nail file.

      Really you need a systemic whole body approach. Looks like your doctor has ruled out the anti-fungal tablet treatment....that in itself, even without being on any other medication usually necessitates liver function monitoring.

      You could try olive leaf extract capsules...but as with any treatment you would need to wait several months before you might notice any significant results....waiting for healthy nail to appear and become obvious. More importantly, since you are on medication already, you would need to check with your doctor regarding taking olive leaf extract to be sure you could take it alongside any prescribed medications you take because some herbs have drug interactions. Read this regarding some known drug interactions with olive leaf extract and the 'herxheimer reaction' which is a reaction one might display from the death of microbes [ http://olivus.com/cautions_olive_leaf.htm ** ]. Caprylic acid [from coconut oil] tablets is another supplement worth trying, and could be taken alongside olive leaf extract. But always talk to your doctor or pharmacist first before taking supplements of any kind if on any prescribed medications.

      ** Not promoting this brand...link posted to a short article for reference purposes only...not affiliated in any way with this company or any other connected with it.

      For long-standing chronic toe nail fungus, a more drastic solution might be to have the toenails surgically removed under local anaesthetic. In the UK, you might be able to go on an NHS waiting list for that...but I think your doctor would only agree to that if it was very chronic. Plus if one was diabetic that might not be a viable solution...you would need to talk to your GP or a chiropodist. There is alternatively laser treatment for toenail fungus. That could prove to be a very expensive option and am not sure if that is available at all on the NHS in the UK. Outside of the UK you would have to enquire with your insurance company if you have private health insurance.

      There might be some anecdotal evidence circulating the Internet for non-pharmaceutical topical treatments having some benefit, perhaps if the condition is not too far advanced. These treatments might include tea tree oil, myrrh oil, Vick's vapour rub, or some other known anti-fungal oils/essential oils...garlic oil might be another for instance. You could certainly try one of those or a combination. But you would have to pre-treat your nail as you would if you were applying the lacquer...filing down any thick growth for instance. One major problem might be getting any treatment to stay in place. Also, to be really effective it needs to penetrate down to the nail root. You should be careful if you have diabetes....it might be better to seek professional help.

      As a preventative in future after successful treatment, or to help with prevention of the infection spreading to healthy toenails: always dry your feet well after showering...air dry for a while...and wear open toe sandals as much as possible in dry sunny weather.

      Toenail fungus could be a signal one's immune system is functioning below par. Diabetics and some with other health conditions, immuno-compromised particularly, might be more prone to fungal infections. If you have any underlying health conditions or concerns...discuss a suitable plan of action with your GP or other healthcare provider.

      Good luck...hope you find a solution and resolution.

  3. QUESTION:
    Is vinegar really effective at curing toenail fungus?
    I think I have a fungus underneath my toenail .. I couldn't get an appointment in with a podiatrist until next month so I was just wondering has anyone had sucess with soaking the infected nail in equal parts vinegar and water 3 times a day ??
    Also which do you think would be more effective applying it to the base of the nail or doing soaks or should I just do both ??
    Thanks in advance

    • ANSWER:
      Hello,
      I've had this problem on my big toe of my left foot for a while and I recently found this Anti-fungal Solution from 'TwinStar herbals.' I've only been using it twice a day for a couple weeks and I've already noticed a huge difference. It was really bad before and now it is growing in normal and the top part is like before, so soon it will be completely normal. The brand probably doesn't matter but try to find a herbal topical solution like it, these are the contents:
      olive oil extracts of organic calendula, organic black walnut hulls and leaf, wild oregano oil, organic garlic, goldenseal root, neem oil, tea tree oil, eucalyptus essential oil, grapefruit seed extract, self-heal flower essence.

      I just take a q-tip and dip it into the solution then apply it to the top of the toe nail. It's amazing how well and fast it works, hope that helps!

  4. QUESTION:
    Is it possible to catch toenail fungus?
    Hello,
    My boyfriend of five years has really horrible toe fungus. Doctors have told him its the worst they have ever seen. He is too scared to treat it with medicine because in order to recieve the prescription you have to have blood work done every month or so, and he has a great fear of needles. When we first started dating it was on one foot and now it has spread to both.

    I am curious to know if it is possible to spread to another person. Normally one of us will sleep with socks on, but sometimes one of us will forgot and our bare feet touched. Do I have reason for concern?

    Thanks for your help!

    • ANSWER:
      Yes my husband has the same problem and after 11 years of being married I am showing signs of my feet drying out, bumps ect.
      Have him soak his feet in crushed up garlic and a little water.
      The garlic is something that your body itself will not try to fight because it is a helper to us, putting your feet in it, since the pores are so big in the feet helps clean out the blood stream as well as fighting the infection you can see.
      I do recommend wearing socks when he does have a break out, but I have learned that it also depends on your bodies constitution, if it is good you won't get it.

  5. QUESTION:
    I need a natural home remedy for toe-nail fungus?
    A guy I know has the beginnings of a toe nail fungus but is a hippie who does not believe in using prescription drugs unless you're dying (lol). Are there any home remedies I can turn him on to.

      Natural antifungals that will dramatically reduce the symptoms of toe nail fungus are Oil of Oregano ~ antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and antiparasitic ..... it has strong antioxidant and antiflammatory effects and is quite effective in eliminating Candida ....... not regular oregano but a wild form (wild mountain oregano, Origanum vulgare species) ..... your local health food store may be able to help you with this one... Oil of Oregano has no side effects and oregano is compatible with any other natural remedy or prescription drug....... the active compounds in Oil of Oregano also act as free radical scavengers thus prevent further tissue damage while encouraging healing.

      Grapefruit Seed Extract ~ Go to your local health food store and ask the resident naturopath his/her advice on Grapefruit seed extract.. they don't usually charge for off the cuff advice and are more than willing to share their knowledge ..... Grapefruit seed extract is a multipurpose (broad spectrum) compound that is currently being used in humans and animals alike to safely fight many types of internal and external infections caused from parasites (single and multi-celled), viruses, bacteria and fungi.

      Grapefruit seed extracts biggest benefit is due to it's multipurpose (broad spectrum) effect. It is effective even if the causes of the infections are known, unknown or misdiagnosed. By eliminating a wide range of dangerous pathogens grapefruit seed extract actually enhances the immune system.

      Freshly crushed cloves of garlic mixed throughout your green vegies and lentils or brown rice, beans, salads etc....... will also help enormously in eradicating parasites and fungus overgrowth..... garlic arre a powerfull natural antibiotic, antiparasitic, antifungal, antibacterial...... that is, if he can tolerate garlic ...... many people suffer from gastric distress eating only the smallest amount of garlic.

      Ask at the health food store about other natural antifungals such as Colloidal Silver, Powerded Vitamin C with bioflavonoids, Olive leaf extract too.......... ;0)

      Read a book called "Complete Candida Yeast Guidebook" ~ Revised 2nd Edition by jeanne Marie Martin with Zoltan P.Rona, M.D... fabulous reading there for you.

      And, of course, complete and total avoidance of any food or drink that contains yeast or sugar ......... an overgrowth of candida albicans will positively thrive and flourish on either yeast or sugar (both natural and processed sugar) ..... and fanatical label reading or simply don't eat from a package and prepare low sugar fresh fruits like pears, strawberries, watermelon and vegies, rices, beans, lentils, some lean meats, organic nuts and seeds yourself ..... and drinking plenty of fresh filtered water .... hydrating yourself properly ..... some people find success by also eliminating natural sugars such as fruits and raw honey...... that's the final route i had to go ..... eliminating all fruit sugars ... even the low sugar ones like pears and strawberries ..... and raw honey for a while.....;0)

      peace baby

  8. QUESTION:
    best thing to use to prevent toenail fungus.?
    my athletes foot has cleared up and been gone for a few months, and i need the toenail fungus cleared up. any home remedies??

    • ANSWER:
      Actually, it wont take that long to clear up- Ive got some excellent home remedies that are cheap, readily available and natural. For years i have witnessed the effectiveness of tea tree oil- it is 100% natural and is anti-fungal, killing all the fungal spores very well. My friend had a fungal problem and the cremes didnt do anything--so she tried tea tree oil and it worked very well-it went away completely. If you buy tea tree oil it will be worth your money (its not expensive) as it does other things too, its excellent to have as a home remedy thing---it can clear pimples very well too as it is also anti-bacterial--killing all the bacterial spores on your skin-killing the pimple. You can even search it on google and it will tell u the same thing. i use tea tree oil for pimples, insect bites/sunburn and it works soooo well. Im very sure this will completely clear away the fungus. If u dnt want 2 get it u can try crushed garlic to put in your socks when u sleep as garlic has a powerful anti-fungal agent in it too-although it may cause blistering. (refer to UrL below if you wish to know more about these anti-fungal things) You can also try seasame oil--its also a powerful anti fungal agent and works well on skin-its sensitive. i hope this helps! :)

  9. QUESTION:
    Are there any effective non-prescription treatments out there for toenail fungus?

    • ANSWER:
      There are a few things you can try.

      Soak the affected toenails for 15 minutes daily in a basin with a mixture of half warm water and half natural apple cider vinegar. You can also put pure, undiluted vinegar on the nail with a medicine dropper two or three times daily.

      Put a few drops of tea tree oil on your toenails and cuticles every day. Rub it in completely.

      Make light grooves in the affected toenails with a nail file and rub vapor rub into the top of the toenail. Do this several times a day for several days. The grooves will help the vapor rub penetrate the nail.

      Try soaking your toes in antiseptic mouth wash daily after a each shower.

      Create a mixture of one part soy sauce and one part pine cleaner and put a small amount in a dropper. Put a few drops on the affected nails after every shower.

      Put a few fresh garlic cloves in the toes of a pair of socks and sleep in them at night or crush some fresh garlic and put it directly on the affected nails.

  10. QUESTION:
    What is your most guaranteed, never fail, home remedy?

    • ANSWER:
      GARLIC is good for itchy skin from ANY cause or to fight infections in cuts or other broken skin from anything like paper cuts to dog bites, early cold or flu symptoms or other internal bacterial or viral infections (add to tomato sauce), to reduce high blood pressure or to offset circulatory problems, and to combat fungal disorders like toenail fungus. It's also useful in eliminating intestinal parasites as part of a detox regimen. 11. QUESTION:
    Is there a simple home remedy for toenail fungus?

    • ANSWER:
      One mothers story of how her daughter's t.f. disappeared overnight

      Grind about 12-15 large cloves of garlic in the blender. Try to pulverize them as much as possible. Mix the garlic with vaseline (not medicated kind), making a yucky paste. Oh boy, does it smell! Anyway, when going to bed at night, spread more plain vaseline on the soles of the feet. Not going up the sides or the heal. Then put this garlic spread that was previously mixed, on the vaseline that you spread on the soles or the feet. Then completely wrap the feet with saran wrap and put on socks. Don't put any garlic mixure on the sides or heals of the feet. I'm told that the mixture is too "hot" for other areas. ALSO, DO NOT WALK ON THIS MIXTURE. I guess if you need to get up for bathroom trips during the night, you should crawl on the floor. This person told me that if you walk on this mixture it will burn the feet. Well, my daughter stayed in bed for about 9 hours and I slept in her room to make sure she didn't get up and forget she had this mixture on her feet and decide to walk to the bathroom. She didn't, and slept all night. When taking the saran wrap off in the morning, unbelievably the garlic mixture was green from toxins that had been pulled from her body during the night. I wiped the mixture off and this is when I discovered that her toe nail fungus was gone for the first time in her life! Her bronchitis was a couple days getting well, but a lot of mucus was pulled out during that night. The fungus has not come back after several months now. Of course she needed to shower well and the entire house smelled of garlic for days! But, a small price to pay for the healing she enjoyed.

  12. QUESTION:

    What is the best and quickest cure for toenail fungus? From experience, out someone you know? Home remedy or from the store, whatever is best! Thanks!

    • ANSWER:

  13. QUESTION:
    home remedies for a toe nail infection.?
    i have this nasty toe nail infection that is eating away at my toenails and i dont want to take any medication. i prefer natural remedies but i will use over the counter medicines if necessary. i heard tea tree oil is really good. can i get that at Walgreens or CVS or Walmart or Kmart or any other store? please help summer is almost here and i dont want to wear my sandals with that nasty infection there.

    • ANSWER:
      Tea tree oil works, and you can get it at Whole Foods or other health food stores, and at GNC.

      Soak gauze with the oil, and wrap it around your toes and tape it.

      However, nail fungus is really hard to get rid of, and will probably take more than that.

      Start taking a garlic supplement 2500 mg three times daily.

      At night, mash a clove of garlic with some raw honey and apply to the infected area. (Gross, I know. But it works.)

  14. QUESTION:
    Toenail fungus?
    Okay, so I got a pedicure three times this summer and the last time I went I think I got some kind of fungus. When I took my polish off last night, a few of my toes had green stuff underneath them (at the corners, underneath the nail). I got most of it out with a toothpick but some parts wouldn't come off so I clipped them. Could this be toenail fungus? My nails aren't yellow or anything, and I'm thinking maybe it just might have been dirt or something under there but I'm not sure. It was underneath the side edges...only on a few toes. Figures This was the first summer I've ever gotten a pedicure and I loved it, so I kept going. I'm not gonna go anymore and I'm just so upset! I'm glad I didn't get a manicure too! I'd be soooo incredibly upset if my fingernails were ruined. If anybody has experience with fungus, that would be great.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi, there. It does sound like it's possibly the beginning stages of a fungal infection. You're lucky you caught it so quickly! To eliminate the fungus quickly and naturally, rub some Tea Tree Oil into and around your toenails when you wake up in the morning (after bathing) and before you go to bed. Tea Tree Oil is the strongest antifungal known and compares equally or better to prescribed antifungal meds. Drink a lot of water right now so that your body can flush out the fungus. Drinking a glass of water with 1-2 drops of Tea Tree Oil in it 2-3 times per day. (Don't overdo it, though, as it is strong.) Eat a lot of garlic (or take supplements) and take a Probiotic or an acidophilus supplement. All of these will help eliminate the fungus quickly and will help ensure it doesn't exist anywhere else in your body. I wish you the best of luck!!

  15. QUESTION:
    why do my toenails split?
    ok,they aren't discolored or discusting, i have had them looked at, but they continue to split. i know for a fact there is no fungus or warts. any ideas?
    yes a podiatrist has looked at them and said nothing about my toenails. I do not paint them, and never go to those NASTY nail salons. i wear loose shoes and they are always comfy, i love my feet! why do you all have to be so f*critical! its a honest question

    • ANSWER:
      Nails that chip, peel, crack, or break easily show a general nutritional deficiency and insufficient hydrochloric acid and protein. Minerals are also needed.

      Brittle nails signify possible iron deficiency, thyroid problems, impaired kidney function, and circulation problems.

      Brittle, soft, shiny nails without a moon may indicate an overactive thyroid.

      For healthy nails be sure to get plenty of quality protein. Eat grains legumes, nuts, egg, and seeds. Eat a diet composed of 50% fresh fruits and raw vegetables to supply necessary vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. Eat all kinds of fruits and vegetables available to you. Eat foods that are rich in sulfur and silicon, such as broccoli, fish onions, garlic, celery, parsley, brussels sprouts, cabbage, fish, turnips, kale, and sea vegetables. Also include foods rich in biotin, such as whole grains.

      Drink plenty quality water, fruit juices and vegetable juices, including carrot juice which is rich in calcium and phosphorus and is very good for strengthening the nails. Ensure you spend a little time in the sun each day. That will help with the production of vitamin D which is important to regulate the absorption and use of calcium and phosphorus.

  16. QUESTION:
    what does it mean if your toenails are kinda yellow and how can you treat it?

    • ANSWER:
      Yellow isn't fungus. If they are yellow with black spots or lines, that is fungus.

      Try soaking your toes in peroxide.

      If it is fungus, give yourself a garlic foot bath.

  17. QUESTION:
    Toe nail fungus, please help?
    I have very bad toenail fungus...there is no clear nail left on my big toes and the nail is layered. I finished the terbafine (spelling?) oral pills about a year ago but they didnt help. Now i have been using a new topical called formula 3 for about a month. My doctor is really leaning towards removing the nails but that idea scares me like crazy!!! Does anyone have advise?

    • ANSWER:
      There are several ways to treat nail fungus growth and problems with herbal remedies. Soak your feed in hot water or a vinegar solution two to three times a day to decrease infection. Several drops of tea tree oil or an anti bacterial essential oil blend, like "Healthy Folks Essential Oil Blend" can be added to the soak for additional relief. Removing additional bacteria and debris from the infected nails and cuticles is critical. Washing your hands or feed with antibacterial soap when dirty and drying them is critical to stopping an infection. Calendula oil prevents nails and cuticles from over drying and can be used if needed. After this steps you can apply a herbal remedy. A very good remedy to treat fungal infections is Black Walnut Salve. Black walnut is one of the best-known remedies for fungal infections and parasite infestations. Black Walnut Salve is great for athlete’s foot, nail fungus, cuts, rashes, insect bites, eczema…and much more.
      Lemon is a natural antiseptic, and it can help start killing the fungus bacteria almost immediately.
      Tea Tree Oil is also a natural antiseptic, and it reportedly works wonderfully for killing nail fungus growth as well.
      Garlic can be used in oil form directly on the infected nails, or you can rub raw garlic on and around the nails too.
      Apple Cidar Vinegar helps soften your skin and remove the dead skin cells, which allows the fungus to be reached and killed easier.

  19. QUESTION:
    this is gross, but! how do i get rid of a foot and toenail fungus?

    • ANSWER:
      Lots of people get this, so don't freak out. It can take quite a while to go away, however, and there's no guarantee it will not come back, even if you use a prescription. The 2 prescription drugs are terbinafine (Lamisil) and itraconazole (Sporanox). Both can damage the liver, and itraconazole also can damage the heart, so be aware that these are not real safe. In addition, you have to take them for about 3 months and about 40 percent of people don't get good results.

      You can try topical vitamin E. If you can't find the oil, you can buy the gel caps, pierce them with a needle and squeeze out the oil. Treat the affected toes twice a day. Tea tree oil (available in health food stores) is also good; use just like vitamin E. Both of these natural ways take a long time--about 4-6 months--but so do the drugs and at least the natural ways are not toxic. Two other natural approaches are garlic oil and oil of oregano.

      Good luck

  20. QUESTION:
    Ingrowing toenail? Home remedies?
    My toenail has got quite large as i haven't trimmed it in a while and i'm trying to cut all the toenail out. There was a little spot so i popped it and now theres puss coming out. I've soaked it in boiling water but it hasn't soothed it. Any other home remedies to get rid of it?

    • ANSWER:
      You know the trick of soaking a boiled egg in vinegar to make the shell soft? Well that's what to do with an ingrown toenail: soak it in vinegar until it gets soft. The acid in the vinegar will remove the calcium, leaving the toenail pliable like silicon. This will keep it from cutting into your toe. If you have puss coming out of your toe, you need to disinfect it and see a doctor to be sure, because infections can be serious and you could potentially lose the whole toe.
      One common problem with toenails is fungus growing underneath. It is a home remedy to kill mold and other fungus with vinegar. I would not soak it in boiling water as that will just give you a burn that would lead to more infection. Seriously, if you burned your toe in boiling water, you just made it worse.
      There are a variety of powerful home remedy natural antibiotics from herbs such as oregano which you could use to make a polstice. Eating lots of raw garlic puts the garlic smell in your blood and you can smell the garlic in the sweat of your feet.
      Garlic is said to be a natural antibiotic, so if you can't get to a doctor, then eat lots of garlic and make an oregano polstice. Other Italian herbs are also strong antibiotics. Strangely, hot peppers are not nearly as effective as Italian herbs for antibiotics.

    • ANSWER:
      My daughter had many years of antibiotics, and problems with awful eczema on her scalp that sounds like yours. She also had many other symptoms like itchy skin, breakouts, rashes and more. We finally figured out it must be Candida.

      Here's a Candida Survey that was helpful for her, and it might help you, too. It really helped my daughter to know about her symptoms, and finally find some treatments that work! She's doing much better now. Hope the same for you. Warm regards and best of luck.

    Is there anything that makes them grow faster/stronger ?
    I have filed them down as they were thickened in some places (the big toes)
    I have tried putting vaseline on them to soften them, but that don't work
    I used to get a pedicure (but after I got a slating, I dont any more)

    • ANSWER:
      According to wikipedia, toenails are made of a tough protein called keratin and "Although it is widely believed that toenails do not grow back, this is not true. Actual growth rate is dependent upon age, gender, season, exercise level, diet, and hereditary factors."

      In Asia, it is common practice to smash garlic into a fine paste and then apply this paste onto fingernails and toenails. Although this turns the nails yellowish in color, the nails brow thicker and faster.

      I hope this was useful, my friend.

  24. QUESTION:
    Bad Toe Nails?
    My toenails have fungus or whatever (yellowish and brittle).

    What might I do about this without using fancy medicine?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi Bandicoot.
      Unfortunately, toenail fungus is difficult to treat because your feet are warm, in a dark environment and moist. Abnormal pH level of the skin, trauma to the nail, unhygienic feet and decreased immunity of the body permit this disease.

      There are many highly successful non-surgical treatments for fungus toenails that give long term relief by treating the abnormal infection. To treat toenail fungus apply tea tree oil to all areas of the toenail and toe that are affected by the fungus. Garlic has also been shown over the years to be a great way to fight even the most persistent cases of toenail fungus. Griseofulvin too has been shown to eliminate toenail fungus after continued use for one year. This safe non-toxic all natural formula helps eliminate toenail fungus or fingernal fungus while the nail grows. You can also try soaking your nails in band-aid in oregano oil. You should see a podiatrist who can take a culture of the nails - it is my advice.

  25. QUESTION:
    Discolouration of nail?
    I have a discolouration under my toenail. The first two days it was like a bruise and was a bit painful. But after that the pain went away and left a black spot underneath the nail. It has been two months now and the spot doesn't spread or anything. It's very ugly but I don't like nail polish. What are the other ways to get rid of it?

    • ANSWER:
      You may have a toenail fungal infection and if so you need to treat the infection. There are a few home remedies you can try, but in the end you may need prescription medication to treat it.

  28. QUESTION:
    hey im in lots of pain because?
    my toe is infected i noe it sounds gross but ive tried everything from violeta remedy to carbonaded water from a safety pin to alcohol (rubbing) PLS PLS PLS PLS!!!!!!!! HELP!

    • ANSWER:
      the natural antibiotics that you should take internally would be garlic (raw fresh..at least 3 or 4 cloves a day), grapefruit seed extract and/or olive leaf extract. (use a tincture).all of these kill bacteria, viruses, fuguses, and protozoans and are found at the health food store. If one rubs garlic on the feet, for example, it will very soon be on the breath and visa versa showing how it goes throughout the body so consume it but it would burn to much to use on the toe directly so don't IMO

      also of help are colloidal silver and oil of oregano..flood our body with these and also apply the colloidal silver.

      I did a little searching and found these ideas too

      http://www.eytonsearth.org/staph-infection-clay.php used clay with great success and saved from amputation this site says (they also have a message board)

      Go to the health food store and get some charcoal capsules. Empty some of the charcoal on a piece of dampened gauze and tape it over your toe, it will draw out the infection. (add this to the bentonite clay to draw the infection out)

      toenail fungus is a cause of infection and difficult to treat..these are recommended but you may need to do more searching on that, but I feel the things I first recommended would be effective (olive leaf, grapefruit seed extract, and fresh garlic --also colloidal silver/oil of oregano would be 2nd tier suggestions)

      - Common Vinegar- As some may now, vinegar is antiseptic. It can also work on a variety of infections including those caused by fungi. You can use apple cider or cane vinegar. You can apply this remedy without diluting it directly on the affected nail. An alternative would be to soak your nail on a basin with equal portions of vinegar and lukewarm water.

      be cautious of tea tree oil and dilute
      - The Tea Tree Oil- This natural remedy is as popular as oil of oregano. It also has strong antifungal and antiseptic properties. It is in fact so strong that concentrated amounts of tea tree oil may cause skin irritation. You should therefore settle for a diluted preparation. Tea tree oil can be applied directly to the infected nail.

      - The Vicks Vapor Rub- This particular remedy isn't easy to explain. In fact, there are very few explanations on why Vicks can work well on nail fungus. It has been suggested that the natural components of Vicks Vapor Rub are possibly good toe nail fungus remedies.

      also might mention dr richard schulze formulas..he says this never fails but it burns a lot so I doubt if I would use on a tender area..he also makes this milder one...you might want to read it and see what you think but maybe try other stuff first

  29. QUESTION:
    my thumb nails have developed deep indents, like ridges. what's wrong?
    what might be wrong with me if my thumb nails have developed indentations parallel to the cuticle? I first noticed one line on each nail, and a few days ago each thumb developed another. It looks like i slammed both my thumbs in a car door really hard, except there is no bruising or pain. I think I have some sort of vitamin deficiency but i don't know which one. Any help would be appreciated, thankyou!

    • ANSWER:
      it could be a nail fungus robbing you of your precious calcium, protein, B vitamins so essential for hair skin and nail health........ an overgrowth of candida albicans ..... if that's the case you need to cut out processed sugar and yeast in your diet (which will only serve to feed an overgrowth of candida albicans) ........ and get yourself a good quality natural antifungal.

      Some suggestions for a natural antifungal are ~ Oil of Oregano ~ antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and antiparasitic ..... it has strong antioxidant and antiflammatory effects and is quite effective in eliminating Candida ....... not regular oregano but a wild form (wild mountain oregano, Origanum vulgare species) ..... your local health food store may be able to help you with this one...

      Freshly crushed cloves of garlic mixed throughout your green vegies and lentils or brown rice, beans, salads etc....... will also help enormously in eradicating parasites and fungus overgrowth..... garlic arre a powerfull natural antibiotic, antiparasitic, antifungal, antibacterial.

      Ask at the health food store about other natural antifungals such as Colloidal Silver, Powerded Vitamin C with bioflavonoids, Olive leaf extract too.......... ;0)

      Read a book called "Complete Candida Yeast Guidebook" ~ Revised 2nd Edition by jeanne Marie Martin with Zoltan P.Rona, M.D... fabulous reading there for you..... good health to you buddy and good luck.

      And, of course, complete and total avoidance of any food or drink that contains yeast or sugar ......... fanatical label reading or simply don't eat from a package and prepare fresh fruit, vegies, rices, beans, lentils, some lean meats, organic nuts and seeds yourself ..... and drinking plenty of fresh filtered water .... hydrating yourself properly ..... some people find success by also eliminating natural sugars such as fruits and raw honey...... that's the final route i had to go ..... eliminating all fruit sugars ... even the low sugar ones like pears and strawberries ..... and raw honey for a while.....;0)

      Other symptoms common of a candida albicans overgrowth in your system are ~

      Digestive disorders, including IBS;
      Gastrointestinal symptoms: thrush, bloating gas, rectal itching;
      Vaginal yeast infections;
      Urinary tract infections;
      Athlete's foot or jock itch;
      Fungal toenails or fingernails;
      Cravings for sugar, bread, or alcohol;

      Skin problems or itching;
      Numbness or tingling in the extremities;
      Respiratory problems;
      Depression;
      Hypoglycemia;
      Short attention span;
      Loss of libido.

  30. QUESTION:
    Any home remedies for...?
    Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of fungus under toenails?

    • ANSWER:
      You may treat the nail using 3% hydrogen peroxide. So that that the hydrogen peroxide can reach the infected area, first cut your nails low. Soak a swab with the hydrogen peroxide and apply it to the affected area. Then allow to dry. You should repeat this application two to three times per day everyday until the nails are in good health again. The oxidative property of hydrogen peroxide breaks down the cells of the fungi causing it to die.

      Another effective way to treat fungus is with the use of garlic. You may follow the instruction in paragraphs 4 and 5 of http://www.thephantomwriters.com/free_content/d/g/garlic-natures-anti-fungal.shtml

      With the garlic treatment you could use elastoplast or bandage to secure the crushed garlic to the affected toe(s).

      If you wear closed shoes, you may want to treat them using hydrogen peroxide.
      Make sure your stocking or sock are dried in the sun when washed.
      Do not wear the same pair of shoe on two consecutive days.
      Change your stockings or socks every day.

  31. QUESTION:
    Intestinal fungus overgrowth question?
    I am 100% sure I have had an intestinal yeast overgrowth in my small intestine area for the past 20 years. It would make perfect sense with how I treated my body in the past. Rounds after rounds of antibiotics for so called sinus infections and ear infection which now I really believe was fungus. After that phase I turned into a sugar addict. I felt like I could not function If I missed a day without my coke and donuts, not to mention coffee throughout the day. I also began drinking beer in large quantities on a daily basis. In my early teens I finally started to suffer the consequences. The symptoms I am stuck with today are: SEVERE BODY ODOR, CONSTIPATION-gi track is a mess, gout like attacks in feet and ankles almost weekly, Fatigue-always feeling drained and ill, blurred vision-pressure behind the eyes, extreme dry mouth with occasional white tongue, on and off sinus infection feeling, yellow tinted toenails at times, brain fog-always spaced out, always feeling toxic-glazed eyes type thing, pimples and abscesses on chest and back that don't respond to antibiotics, etc. Nothing responds to antibiotics. These are the most noticeable I deal with everyday. The VERY interesting part... These symptoms are 80% better when the weather is dry and sunny. It is a GIVEN that these symptoms will be in full force when it is wet or damp usually in the morning. Damp weather- Fungus? One thing I do agree with Doctors is that all my blood work looks ok, including colonoscopy, endoscopy, etc. However, every time I bring up the subject of fungus the three hundred dollar appointment is over in lest than 10 minutes and I am belittled and told to see a psychiatrist. So here is what I am really wondering. I went to a different doctor today at an urgent care because I now have the worst sinus infection and bronchitis in my entire life. I brought up the question about fungus and we talked for a while and she agreed with what I was saying and took a swab of the back of my throat and sent it in to get tested for fungus. She said if it is a fungal sinus infection the swab will test positive because it will drip down the back of my throat. At this point at my request I refused to get any antibiotics till the test comes back. I truly feel the fungus is infecting more than one area of my body in and out. She told me the fungus has to be localized and if I had fungus in my blood I wouldn't be sitting in her chair I would be so sick almost dead. I want to test positive for fungus so I can finally treat it, however if what she is saying is true there might be a possibility the test will come back negative because most of the symptoms come from the gi tract. Anyways, I'm just really frustrated and I wish I could just get tested for a general overall fungus blood test instead of swabbing one localized area to possibly test negative and be sent out to suffer some more. I don't have the money to go the alternative route right now, but I do have insurance so I'm trying to use it. Does anybody have any advice or been in this type of situation that could help? Sorry about the novel!

    • ANSWER:
      Definitely. I cured myself of a chronic candida albicans infection that almost ruined my life by changes in diet and in taking vitamins and supplements.
      You must get a book called Yeast Control In Seven Days. Also Prescription For Nutritional Healing did me wonders too.
      You need to stop eating processed sugar! Use stevia (found in health food stores) to sweeten drinks and drink unsweetened mineral water, like perrier, instead of sweetened sodas.
      Stop eating breads and starches! They turn into sugar in your system in short order. Cut them out-of your diet, and eat vegetables, way more vegetables. If you must have starch have brown rice.
      You need essential fatty acids, found in fish oil. Take this daily, as well as garlic supplements.
      Yeast needs moisture, sugar and agitation to thrive. Starve out the sugar. Also, your doctor can prescribe a simple pill that costs 8-15 dollars (diflucan) and it wipes out the yeast. However, it will regain entry to your body and overgrow again if you give it the same conditions.
      You need to replenish the healthy-gut-bacteria: acidophilus. You can take it in pill form, or powder, or it can be commonly found in yoghurt (plain yoghurt sweetened with stevia is best!)
      I finally stopped getting yeast infections and my mental clarity returned. But even so, if I drink an entire can of soda, it is so acidic that it kills the good bacteria that prevent yeast-overgrowth, and sugarifies my system, and I can feel one coming on (a yeast infection).

  32. QUESTION:
    Help on getting rid of foot fungus?
    Ok so im 17 n i have really bad foot fungus on almost every toenail..its sooo embarrasing and idk how to hide it cus even if i use nail polish some r still thick so its weird..
    i wanna start wearing high heels and im going to have to for school dances n prom is coming up in may..so can anyone help me with any ideas or remedies on how to get rid of foot fungus??
    Pleaseeee!!

    • ANSWER:
      ALAS! I can understand that what the problems your are facing. Here I mention some good tips that will hopefully help you
      •Avoid plastic shoes and materials that have been treated to keep water out. They trap perspiration and create a warm, moist place for fungus to grow. Expose your feet to the air. Cotton and wool socks allow moisture to be drawn away from the feet.
      •Clean your toenails. Toenails are breeding spots for the athlete's foot fungus. Scrape the undersides of your toenails clean at least every two to three days. Use an orange stick, toothpick or wooden match. Avoid using a metal file. The metal could scratch the nail providing niches for the fungus to collect and breed.
      •Clean your feet thoroughly at least twice a day. Fungi are parasites that survive by "eating" the outside layer of your dead skin. Soap and water help to remove this layer. Be sure to thoroughly dry your feet afterward, paying particular attention to the web spaces in between your toes. Topical application of tea tree oil, probably due to its involvement in the histamine response has beneficial effects during treatment of athlete’s foot.
      •A study of the effect of 3% (v/v) aqueous onion extract was shown to be very effective in laboratory conditions against Trichophyton mentagrophytes and T. rubrum.
      •Ajoene, a compound found in garlic, is sometimes used to treat athlete's foot.
      •Rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar is also good to eradicate this.
      Hope fully these will help you. Wish you best of luck

  33. QUESTION:
    Anti-fungal remedy?
    I have mild cases of dandruff, eczema, and toenail discoloration, all of which I have been told is caused by fungus. Is there some remedy I can take as a pill or otherwise that can kill this fungus growing inside of me?

    • ANSWER:
      You will have to take an holistic approach as there is no magic bullet at such but rather the treatment needs to be the adoption of many approaches so as to get any fungus in the system under control, against its competitors: the gut friendly micro-organisms such as the Lactobacillus species (as found in many commercial yogurts nowadays).

      If you have a fungal overgrowth, you may have some other symptoms such as feeling sluggish, bloatedness, abdominal gases, and a coated tongue and yeasty taste in the mouth. Symptoms may worsen after a meal loaded with sugar, further suggesting a systemic fungal problem. I think its rare that the problem is isolated to the toe nails so you do need an whole-body holistic approach. Make sure your blood sugar levels are within the normal range too as fungal problems can often be linked to raised blood sugar levels. You need to rule out diabetes. Talk to your health care advisor as you should be having periodic blood sugar checks anyway.

      Firstly, you really need to think about cutting down on the fungus feeders: sugar and sugary products (cakes, sweeets, biscuits), yeast and yeast-like products and natural foodstuffs (bread, beer & wines, mushrooms, marmite/vegemite for example).

      There are some herbs and herbal products or natural supplements that can help: garlic, caprylic acid (extracted from coconut oil), biotin (a B Vitamin that stops the mycelial/branching form developing, cinnamon, pau d'Arco, aloe vera juice, goldenseal tincture, myrrh tincture, grapefruit seed extract, chamomile tea, acidophilus capsules.

      You could consider taking some or all of these supplements, depending on how much you want to spend. If you are on blood thinning medication then talk to a doctor or pharmacist first before taking garlic.

      Have you tried Rescue Remedy cream, chamomile cream or calendula cream for your eczema. These might help.

      Having a colonic irrigation is something else worth considering as the complete cleaning out of the colon can help remove much yeast overgrowth. Find a reputable practitioner who can offer detoxing advice as part of the treatment.

      Hope this helps.
      Best wishes.

  34. QUESTION:
    what medicine can cure foot crack,itch &bleed have seen dematologist prescribed salicillic acid & hydrocotyone
    worked for a while & started again big cracks

    • ANSWER:
      This sound like Athletes foot. Hydrocortisone is a nasty medicine and doe not fix the problem it only masks it. Keep taking the Sallicillic Acid and try these out.

      ATHLETE'S FOOT

      Athlete's foot (also known as tinea) is characterised by the symptoms below.

      Symptoms

      Itching and irritation between the toes

      Peeling and cracking of the skin in the area

      Rash and redness

      Dry, flaking skin on the soles of the feet

      Unpleasant foot odour

      In severe cases, the toenails become distorted, thick and white in colour

      Causes
      Athlete's foot is caused by a fungal infection which is easily transferred from person to person and is commonly picked up by using communal showers and toilets (such as at the gym or in a caravan park).

      The condition is more likely to develop when the area between the toes is moist, such as occurs with excessive perspiration or from not properly drying the area. Certain types of plastic shoe, which do not allow the foot to breathe, can also contribute to the condition.

      Bacterial infection may develop if the fungal infection is untreated.

      Natural Therapies

      Treat athlete's foot at the first sign of itchy feet or redness between your toes

      Soak your infected feet in warm, salted water (1 tsp salt per cup) for 5 to 10 minutes every day. Dry your feet thoroughly (a fan or hair dryer is best). As long as the area is not blistered or cracked, remove flakes of dead skin with a soft brush before using any topical treatments. Tea tree oil may be effective to kill the fungus; for inflamed skin be sure to dilute the oil 15% in water, or try a tea tree oil-based powder Do not tear off flaking skin; you may break nearby healthy skin and spread the infection.

      Recurrent infection with athlete's foot may indicate that your resistance needs a boost - try echinacea and garlic in combination with vitamin C

      Wear a pair of thongs or sandals when using communal showers or changing rooms

      Never share shoes, socks, or towels

      Always clean the shower at home after use to avoid spreading the infection to others in the household. Avoid walking around the house barefoot, as this can also spread the infection

      Avoid shoes and socks made of synthetic (man-made) material such as nylon and rubber - these encourage your feet to perspire. Instead, choose cotton socks and leather shoes, and when possible wear open-toed shoes to expose your feet to the air.

      Hope this has helped.

  35. QUESTION:
    What non-prescription remedies exist for fungal infections?
    A number of years ago, I went to see my doctor about a fungal nail infection on one of my toes. He then referred me to a dermotologist. I was prescribed lamisil for 3 months. Lamisil was not working quickly as it should have been. Now, due to another medicine I was on and still am on, I was not able to take the other one available. After 2 months, lamisil was discontinued because of a side-effect (bone marrow depression). In Canada, the limit for lamisil treatments is 3 months in Ontario. Given this, none of the prescription drugs for toenail fungal infections. Vicks was suggested to me and it worked to an extent. However, it only prevented the fungal infection from getting worse. Garlic pills are effective to an extent. It is not like you can lysol it on a hard surface to get rid of it. What other oral substances can I use to eliminate this fungal infection?

    • ANSWER:
      If your willing to try one natural remedy (garlic pills), perhaps you would be willing to try another. Collidal silver will kill off just about any type of infection out there, but it takes a little bit longer than traditional medications. I would take the recommended amount by mouth, along with rubbing a soaked cotton ball over the infection. It works by disarming the lung of single cell organisms, such as fungi, bacteria and viruses. When the silver gets close, the organism suffocates essentially. But it is totally harmless to the human body. Actually, it was being heavily researched around the turn of last century as the first ever antibiotic. However, faster acting penicillin was invented, and colloidal silver was pretty much forgotten about, for research into different types of fast acting antibiotics.

      I have never had fungal infections in my nails, but I have used it before to help with plenty of other infections, seeing as I cannot take regular antibiotics except in life or death situations, and I get mild infections pretty frequently (mainly in my ears and throat or when I get a cut). It doesn't work very fast, but it is safe, and it does work if you give it time. You can buy it at natural food stores, no prescription needed. Hope I've helped.

      Candida (also known as thrush) is a fungal disease which can affect many parts of the body, but is particularly likely to affect warm, damp areas such as the genital region.
      Symptoms

      Symptoms of Candida are diverse, and may include:

      * Vaginal or penile discharge which may be yellow-white in colour and smell unpleasant
      * Itching and burning of the affected areas (particularly the vaginal region and nappy rash areas in babies)
      * Small white patches on the gums, tongue, lips and inside the cheeks which may or may not be painful, and cannot be scraped off (this is a common symptom in infants)
      * Diarrhoea or constipation, bloating and flatulence, abdominal pain
      * Adverse reactions or a worsening of symptoms after eating certain foods
      * Depression, anxiety, irritability, inability to concentrate, pre-menstrual syndrome
      * Fatigue
      * Headaches
      * Recurrent episodes of cystitis
      * Damaged and painful fingernails and/or toenails (tinea)
      * Cravings for sugar, bread products and alcohol

      Causes

      Candida is caused by the yeast-like fungus Candida albicans which normally lives in healthy balance with other (benign) bacteria and yeasts that inhabit our mouths, bowels, skin and other mucous membranes.

      When this natural balance is upset, Candida multiplies dramatically and lodges deep into the tissues, causing an outbreak of thrush. Candida imbalance may be present for long periods without causing symptoms, especially in men, but may become troublesome due to hormonal changes, stress, emotional factors, or an unbalanced diet.

      Factors that may trigger Candida overgrowth include:

      * Antibiotic use
      * The oral contraceptive pill
      * The use of cortisone and other steroids
      * Poor dietary habits
      * Stress

      Oral thrush occurs most frequently in babies and older people (where it may be due to ill-fitting dentures, cuts or abrasions) and in those with depleted immune systems (for example due to HIV).
      Natural therapies

      The naturopathic approach to Candida infection is to improve resistance to infection, whilst at the same time addressing the overgrowth of the Candida organism.

      * Probiotics such as acidophilus and bifidus bacteria are "good" bacteria that normally inhabit the digestive tract and the vagina. Probiotic supplementation may help to address the imbalance caused by an overgrowth of Candida, and may help relieve digestive symptoms such as flatulence and diarrhoea.
      * The mineral chromium assists the body with sugar utilisation and may help to reduce sugar craving symptoms; (if you are diabetic, discuss this with your healthcare professional before using it)
      * The herb garlic has anti-fungal properties and is prescribed to assist with fungal infections such as Candida
      * Echinacea stimulates the body's resistance and may help to reduce susceptibility to infection

      Lifestyle factors

      A diet free of yeast and sugar will help your body to fight Candida infection. Avoid bread, alcohol, mushrooms and yeast spreads, as well as sugar in any form. (Hint - when checking ingredient lists, words ending in -ose, such as maltose, lactose and glucose, generally refer to forms of sugar).

      Garlic and onions display antimicrobial actions and should be eaten liberally to assist the body to fight the infection. Yoghurt containing live probiotics such as acidophilus and bifidus is also a valuable addition to the diet.

      It is also important to boost your immune system by eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

      In babies it is essential that treatment is combined with regularly changed nappies and that the skin is kept dry.

      Remedy

      Candida is more likely to develop in warm, moist environments. Try to wear cotton rather than nylon underwear, and always ensure a baby's nappy is changed as quickly as possible.

      A healthy diet and lifestyle combined with good hygiene will reduce the likelihood of developing Candida. Avoid excessive amounts of yeast-based foods such as bread and try not to eat too many sugary foods.

      Important Notes

      Many antibacterial, corticosteroid and immuno-suppressive therapies increase susceptibility to Candida, as do pregnancy, diabetes and some other diseases. Consult with your healthcare professional if you have concerns in this regard.

      In certain individuals, such as those with depleted immunity, Candida infection may require immediate medical attention.

      Recurrent thrush is sometimes due to an infected sexual partner - both people may need to be treated before the situation is resolved.

    • ANSWER:
      put her on a special kind of diet. she should only eat vegetables and fruits 3 times a day. maybe if she brushes her tongue then the black stuff will go away so she should brush her tongue and teeth 3-4 times a day.
      Try to massage her feet and legs so that they could feel
      better. massage them every 2 hours. tell ur mom to wash her feet every day in hot or cold water in case of any infections or sores.but tell her not to soak her feet or else her skin will get really dry so just wash them. the cause of vessel breakage is that not enough blood gets to the feet so ur mom should try to do leg and feet exersizes. if she can walk she should swim atleast 2 to 3 times a weak to get the blood pressure level in her feet and legs up. if u dont have a pool go to a public/local pool. she has to trim her toenails often so that fungus wont grow under them and so that they wont turn yellow and thick. About the sore throat and black tongue: For her throat she needs to eat raw garlic cause it will get out all the bacteria and viruses out and at the same time it will help her tongue. She needs to eat raw garlic every hour. she can also eat lots of raw onion and she should drink a half cup of lemon juice every 3 to 4 hours. I really hope your mother feels much better and i hope i helped.
